Welcome to Principles and Practices- Requirements for Early Intervention
The Infant and Toddler Connection of Virginia is committed to providing a comprehensive, coordinated training system for early intervention practitioners. This ensures consistent provision of early intervention services throughout Virginia by highly qualified personnel. With the exception of physicians, audiologists and registered dietitians, all practitioners who provide service coordination or other early intervention services must obtain early intervention certification before they can provide direct services.
Early Intervention Certification
The Early Intervention Certification is comprised of the following four modules:
- Child Development
- Family Centered Practices
- Service Pathway
- Practitioner Requirements
A fifth module, Supervision in Early intervention, is required for those individuals who supervise other practitioners.
A sixth module, Early Intervention Service Coordination and Targeted Case Management, is required for those individuals who will be applying for Early Intervention Case Manager certification and who will be providing service coordination within the Virginia Early Intervention (Part C) system.
These modules are aligned with the Infant & Toddler Connection of Virginia Core Competencies as a part of the Comprehensive System of Personnel Development. The Core Competencies reflect the research-based knowledge and abilities that all early intervention practitioners should demonstrate. Each module has a competency test that must be passed with a score of 80% proficiency. Upon successful completion of each module, practitioners may download a certificate of completion for the module.
Practitioners who wish to become certified practitioners in Virginia's early intervention system are required to complete two steps:
- Complete the four required training modules plus any additional required modules based on role (i.e., Supervisors must complete the Supervision module; Service Coordinators must complete the EITCM module; and
- Complete and submit an online application available at: https://www.eicert.dbhds.virginia.gov/
Practitioners who are approved for Virginia early intervention certification will receive an email notifying them that they are certified. They will also receive a copy of the Certification Certificate.
We would like to extend our gratitude to the many families across Virginia who shared their lives through photos to help enhance these modules. A special thank you to Andrea Adlemann, Family Resource Coordinator from the Infant & Toddler Connection of Fairfax-Falls Church, Child Development Resources and the ARC of Virginia Family Involvement Project for bringing extra warmth and color to our website!
